Konrad von Abel, conductor was born in 1958 in Stuttgart and gained his first musical training with the Hymnus-Chorknaben. At the age of 17 he met Sergiu Celibidache, whose manner of making music exerted considerable influence. Von Abel then studied Piano and Music Theory at the Musikhochschule in Stuttgart, graduating in 1983. During this time he was a member of the masterclasss held by Sergiu Celibidache. Between 1986-1989 he studied Philosophy with Prof. Henrich and Musicology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich.
During his time as Artistic Assistant to Sergiu Celibidache with the Munich Philharmonic between 1986-1996 he assumed responsibility for Celibidache’s conducting class and became increasingly involved with numerous international conducting activities. He conducted the Sinfonica Siciliana di Palermo, the Munich Philharmonic, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Bari, the Orchestre Régional de Picardie, the Turin Philharmonic, Finland’s Kokkola Orchestra, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Valencia in Venezuela and the Academy Orchestra of the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Japan. The current climate of customary musical life offers with decreasing frequency the working conditions von Abel feels are necessary. He pursues his aims therefore mainly in places and institutes in which he is able to create a suitable environment.
His energies are partly directed at building up professional orchestras in various countries such as Italy, France, Venezuela and the Philippines. Von Abel’s numerous seminars devoted to musical phenomenology, his masterclasses in chamber music and his conducting classes in France, Switzerland and Germany – the most recent being held in October 2002 during the 1st. Sergiu Celibidache Festival in Munich – can count among their membership participants from around the world. Konrad von Abel is currently working on a topic the foundations of which were laid during his journeyman years and that has been subject to an in-depth process of continual development: musical phrasing and articulation.
Konrad von Abel is the Artistic Director of the Académie Internationale de Musique / Association Celibidache near Besançon, which was founded in 1999. He made a number of highly successful appearances in France and Germany with the Orchestre des Régions Européennes based in the region.
The MonteverdiChor München was founded by Konrad von Abel and he remains today its chief conductor. Regular concerts have been given in Germany and neighbouring countries with this highly qualified a cappella ensemble.
For the 2004 season von Abel has initiated a concert series with programmes devoted to the rediscovery of an interesting figure: Heinrich Kaminski (1886-1946), one of the most important composers of the first half of the 20th century. A concert tour with the Orchestre des Régions Européennes in October 2004 will give performances of key orchestral and choral works by this composer, who was the teacher of Carl Orff. Pieces by composers forming part of the Kaminsky circle such as Reinhard Schwarz-Schilling and Heinz Schubert will also be played.
More details about this project is to be find on the artist's website.
